Traditional lenders either refuse or charge rates that eat the rider's margin. Electric fleets add a second question: who finances a battery that can be stolen or mishandled?\n\n## What a connected vehicle changes\n\nEvery MargTor-engineered platform carries an **IoT unit integrated with the motor controller** (FarDriver-class controllers with embedded telemetry). It reports:\n\n- GPS position and trips, speed, odometer;\n- battery state of charge and health, cell temperatures, charge events;\n- fault codes from the controller and BMS;\n- tamper and power-off events.\n\nConnectivity falls back gracefully — **4G → 2G → SMS → LoRa** — because coverage in rural Tanzania or eastern DRC is patchy. The unit also exposes two controls that lenders care about: **speed limiting** and **remote disable**, combined with **geo-fencing**.\n\n## Digital collateral\n\nIf a borrower misses instalments, the lender does not need a repossession team. The vehicle can be limited to 20 km/h, then immobilised at the next stop, and located for recovery. Riders know this, and the data shows the effect: comparable telematics-secured portfolios in East Africa report **collection rates around 90%** (industry reports; results vary by lender and market), versus far lower numbers for unsecured micro-loans. Default is no longer about character judgement; it is about an asset that stops working when it is not paid for.\n\n## Mobile money as the repayment rail\n\nRiders repay daily or weekly through M-Pesa, Airtel Money or Tigo Pesa — the same rails they use for swaps. Integration with **bank and fintech APIs** (KCB, Equity and others) lets the operator reconcile repayments automatically, flag a late payer within hours and apply graduated responses (reminder → speed limit → disable). Repayment history becomes a portable credit score the rider can take to the next loan.\n\n## Battery-level security\n\nSwappable packs have their own identity and GPS. A pack only works in vehicles and cabinets registered to the network; outside it, it will not discharge. This solves the \"who finances the battery\" question: the battery pool is operator-owned, trackable and effectively useless to a thief.\n\n## Underwriting model MargTor supports\n\n1. **Telematics-secured credit** on the vehicle — small deposit, daily instalments, digital collateral.\n2. **Micro-financing** via mobile-money partners for deposits and insurance.\n3. **Lease-to-own with BaaS** for fleets — 3–5-year amortisation, battery as opex.\n4. **Institutional layer** — BGK/KUKE buyer credit for the infrastructure (cabinets, ESS, assembly line).\n\nData from the fleet is also what investors and development banks ask for: utilisation, uptime, repayment, energy sold per hub. A fleet that reports is a fleet that can be refinanced.\n\n*See also: Battery-as-a-Service · SACCOs and cooperatives · Export financing for EV infrastructure.*","related":[{"slug":"saccos-and-cooperatives","lang":"en","kind":"article","title":"SACCOs and cooperatives: the deployment partners that make fleets work","summary":"In East Africa riders, fishers and traders are already organised.
