In lakeside and rural trading centres of Tanzania, Kenya and eastern DR Congo, energy means diesel generators, kerosene, charcoal and petrol carried in by road. Each litre is a cash outflow from the local economy, and every price spike is felt immediately.\n\n## The hub as anchor load\n\nA solar battery-swap hub changes this because it brings a **large, predictable, paying load** to a place that never had one. Boda riders need 2–3 kWh each per day, every day, and they pay by mobile money. That demand justifies 20–40 kWp of solar, an ESS of 50–100 kWh and a professional operator — and once that infrastructure exists, selling power to everyone else is nearly free.\n\n## What a hub does in practice\n\n- **Swaps batteries** for motorcycles, three-wheelers and increasingly boats — ~24 packs a day from a 12-bay cabinet.\n- **Offers a 230 V socket** for phone charging, barbers, welders, cold storage, milling.\n- **Lends or rents packs for the home** — a swappable boda pack powers LED lighting and a phone for about two weeks.\n- **Runs 24/7** with a solar-first strategy, ESS overnight and a generator failsafe so that swapping continues through outages.\n- **Employs ~20 people** directly and indirectly: attendants, technicians, security, hosting shops.\n\nThe external reference model MargTor builds on — a Kenyan swap network run by a third-party operator — reports about **2,000 e-motos and 70 stations** in cooperation with SACCOs and women's cooperatives (operator-reported figures, not a MargTor deployment), each hub serving riders within a **30 km radius**.\n\n## Why it earns money\n\nThe hub's margin is on energy. Solar electricity, once the panels are financed, costs 5–8 KES/kWh over its life; a swap sells energy at the equivalent of 15–25 KES/kWh including service. Small, frequent mobile-money payments keep bad debt low. Because the anchor load (riders) covers the fixed cost, every extra kWh sold to a household or shop is high-margin — this is the \"micro-utility\" logic.\n\n## Independence as a product\n\nDuring the 2022–2024 fuel shocks, villages with a solar hub kept moving and kept lights on while neighbours queued for petrol. Energy independence is not a slogan here; it is what customers buy. For governments it also means hard currency not spent on fuel imports and new, formal jobs in places that had none.\n\n## Design rules MargTor applies\n\n1. Size solar for the daily swap energy plus 30% headroom; size the ESS for evening peak and one cloudy day.\n2. Put the hub where riders already stop — stage, market, ferry landing.\n3. Standardise one pack across 2W, 3W, boats and home use.\n4. Telematics from day one: you cannot run a utility you cannot see.\n5. Generator as failsafe only — never as the base case.\n\n*See also: Battery swapping explained · Energy storage for mobility hubs · Electric boats for Lake Victoria.*","related":[{"slug":"energy-storage-ess-africa","lang":"en","kind":"article","title":"Energy storage (ESS) for mobility hubs: chemistry, sizing and failsafes","summary":"An ESS is what lets a swap hub charge from the sun by day and dispense full batteries at night.
