Members save regularly, borrow from the pool and share surpluses. Kenya has thousands of them; Tanzania and Uganda have strong equivalents (SACCOS, VSLAs). Boda-boda riders form SACCOs around a *stage* — the corner or junction where they wait for customers — and the SACCO sets rules, collects daily contributions and vouches for members with lenders and police.\n\n## Why SACCOs matter for electric fleets\n\n1. **Instant customer base.** A stage SACCO with 80 riders is a hub's launch volume. Converting a SACCO converts a location.\n2. **Group guarantee.** Members co-guarantee each other's loans; peer pressure keeps repayment high and reduces the lender's screening cost.\n3. **Site selection.** The SACCO knows where riders start and end their day, where they refuel and where they feel safe leaving a vehicle — exactly where a swap cabinet should go.\n4. **Trust and training.** New technology spreads through a SACCO's chairman and mechanics faster than through advertising.\n5. **Governance.** SACCOs are registered, audited entities — a counterparty an investor or bank can contract with.\n\n## Women's cooperatives and the micro-utility\n\nIn the external reference model MargTor builds on — a third-party Kenyan swap network reporting about **2,000 e-motos and 70 stations** — many swap stations are hosted and operated by **women's cooperatives**. The cooperative owns or leases the hub, employs attendants, sells 230 V power and home-battery rentals alongside swaps, and shares the margin. This spreads income beyond riders, anchors the hub in the community and has proven more resilient than operator-only models.\n\n## Fisher cooperatives on the lakes\n\nOn Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika, Beach Management Units and fisher cooperatives play the same role for **electric boats**: they aggregate demand for motors and packs, negotiate landing-site charging and enforce repayment. A single landing site with 40 boats is a micro-utility customer the size of a boda stage.\n\n## How MargTor works with cooperatives\n\n- **Discovery with the committee**, not just the chairman: routes, incomes, pain points, existing loans.\n- **Pilot with 5–10 members** who are respected riders; let their data (savings, uptime) do the selling.\n- **Group financing** structured with the SACCO's own savings as first-loss, topped up by a lender using telematics as collateral.\n- **Hub hosted by the cooperative**, with a revenue share and a training plan for local technicians.\n- **Scale by stage**: one SACCO at a time, one cabinet per stage, within a 30 km radius of the first hub.\n\nThe result is a fleet that is socially embedded: the people who ride it, host its energy and repay its loans are the same community — which is the strongest form of collateral there is.\n\n*See also: The boda-boda economy · Telematics and credit · Solar swap hubs as micro-utilities.*","related":[{"slug":"export-financing-bgk-kuke","lang":"en","kind":"article","title":"Export financing for EV infrastructure: BGK buyer credit, KUKE and Special Economic Zones","summary":"Vehicles are financed by riders; cabinets, storage and assembly lines are financed by banks.
