Without storage, a hub either over-sizes its grid connection (if one exists) or runs out of charged packs at 6 pm. A **stationary energy storage system** sits between the panels and the cabinet: it absorbs midday solar, feeds the cabinet chargers in the evening and overnight, and smooths the load on a weak grid or a generator.\n\n## Why LFP\n\nFor hubs in East Africa the chemistry of choice is **lithium iron phosphate (LFP)**:\n\n- **Cycle life** of 3,000–6,000 full cycles — ten-plus years of daily use.\n- **Thermal stability** — far less prone to thermal runaway in 35 °C ambient conditions.\n- **No cobalt**, lower cost per kWh, flat voltage curve that is easy on inverters.\n- Slightly lower energy density than NMC is irrelevant for a box that never moves.\n\nMargTor sources LFP cells and packs through its battery partner Hadron Energy (35% held by Arthur Toren Associates) with full provenance, and the same LFP chemistry is used in the swappable vehicle packs — so second-life vehicle packs can be re-deployed into the ESS.\n\n## Sizing a hub\n\nTake a 12-bay, 16 kW cabinet cycling 24 packs of 2.5 kWh a day:\n\n| Item | Figure |\n|---|---|\n| Daily swap energy | 24 × 2.5 kWh ≈ 60 kWh (plus ~10% losses → 66 kWh) |\n| Solar array | 66 kWh ÷ ~4.5 peak-sun hours ≈ 15 kWp; with 30% headroom → **20 kWp** |\n| ESS | evening + night demand ≈ 50–60% of daily energy → **40–60 kWh usable** |\n| Inverter / charger | 16 kW continuous cabinet load + 230 V socket load → **20–25 kW** |\n| Generator failsafe | 15–20 kVA, auto-start below 20% state of charge |\n\nAdd 230 V community loads (cold storage, milling) by scaling solar and ESS, not the generator.\n\n## Industrial ESS beyond the hub\n\nLarger sites — ferry landings, fish-processing plants, assembly lines — need 200 kWh to 2 MWh. The design principles are identical: LFP, modular racks, a battery management system that reports to the same fleet platform as the vehicles, and a controller that prioritises solar, then storage, then grid, then generator. MargTor delivers ESS from **50 kWh to 2 MWh** as part of a mobility or micro-grid project.\n\n## Failsafe, not fallback\n\nA diesel generator is cheap to install and expensive to run; many \"solar\" sites end up burning diesel most nights because storage was undersized to save capex. MargTor's rule: the generator is a **failsafe that keeps the hub running through outages** and should run less than 5% of hours. If it runs more, the design — not the weather — is wrong.\n\n## Safety and compliance\n\nVentilated enclosures, cell-level temperature monitoring, fire-rated separation from the cabinet, earthing and lightning protection, and local electrical certification. Operators are trained to read the BMS data, because an ESS is only as safe as the person who reacts to its alarms.\n\n*See also: Solar swap hubs as micro-utilities · Battery swapping explained · Export financing for EV infrastructure.*","related":[{"slug":"telematics-and-credit","lang":"en","kind":"article","title":"Telematics-secured credit: how data makes EV lending bankable","summary":"Most riders have no credit file.
